Michael Pegum Posted 30 September , 2004 Share Posted 30 September , 2004 Can anyone help with explaining abbreviations of units found on a Great War Roll of Honour? They are: L.C. R. East Kent M. Rifles Motor Amn.Col. A. Transport The last three look obvious, but they don't appear on the list at www.regiments.org. The second may be the Buffs, of course, but "Mounted(?) Rifles"? Tim Godden Posted 30 September , 2004 Share Posted 30 September , 2004 Hi Michael, L.C. - Lance Corporal R. East Kent M. Rifles - Royal East Kent Mounted Rifles Motor Am Col. - Motorised Ammunition Column (ASC Motorised Transport) A. Transport - Armoured Transport, Ammunition Transport (ASC Motorised Transport) All just guesses I am afraid, although I know a chap on my local war memorial was A.S.C.M.T. which turned out to be as above. All the best, Tim
Ed Matthews Posted 30 September , 2004 Share Posted 30 September , 2004 I would have said that L.C. probably stood for Labour Corps? Rgds Ed
Ed Matthews Posted 30 September , 2004 Share Posted 30 September , 2004 R.East Kent M. Rifles = Royal East Kent Yeomanry (The Duke of Connaught's Own)(Mounted Rifles). Rgds Ed
Michael Pegum Posted 1 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 1 October , 2004 Many thanks. I think you have solved them between you. Could I ask you about another, which I put on the forum some months ago, but without success: S.A.M.C.C. (definitely not S.A.M.G.C., which could have been South African Machine Gun Corps, if there was one) Michael Pegum
