Soldiers Rank and Promotion System

I am researching a friends relative who served with the RAMC in the Great War (and survived).

He went to France in January 1916, aged 23 years.

Although he served for nearly three years and won the Military Medal on 28 May 1917 for gallantry, he never rose above the rank of Private.

I find it hard to believe that he wasn't offered promotion.

Could he refuse promotion and if he could why would he want to?

He had a young wife at home so surely the extra money would have come in handy.

The fact that he had a gallantry award does not mean he was suitable for promotion. There is no link between the two I am afraid.

Well, there is, sort of: how many VC men were NOT offered at least a LCpl appointment? Precious few I believe.

My late grandfather, Arthur Cundiff, served in the Cheshire regiment from 1916 to 1919 and survived. He became a lance corporal and acting corporal.

He refused further promotion to sergeant because it would have meant both leaving friends and having the responsibility of ordering men to both kill and risk being killed, which he simply wasn't willing to do.
