Guest rose storkey Posted 4 October , 2004 Share Posted 4 October , 2004 ernest stanley BAKER (Somerset Light Infantry) was in training at Winchester before being sent to the front. he was posted missing presumed deas on the Somme , Sept 1916. Winchester had a number of camps so it will be difficult to narrow it down, A few were Pitt Hill, Magdalen Hill, Hursley Park, Winnall Down, Morn Hill, etc. The information from CWGC & SDGW provides the following for Ernest Stanley Baker - Commonwealth War Graves Commission: Name: BAKER, ERNEST S. Initials: E S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: Somerset Light Infantry Unit Text: 6th Bn. Age: 20 Date of Death: 16/09/1916 Service No: 19983 Additional information: Son of John and Caroline Baker, of Durley Hill, Keynsham, Bristol. Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 2 A Cemetery: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL Soldiers Died in the Great War: Born: Keynsham, Somerset Enlisted: Bath Residence: Keynsham, Somerset Killed in action 6th Bn. Somerset Light Infantry formed part of 43rd Brigade, 14th (Light) Division. The Division concentrated around the Guildford area late in November 1914 and in mid-February moved to Aldershot for divisional field manoeuvres and final war training. Orders to move overseas were received by the Division in May. It left from Southampton, and by 25 May was formed up around Watten, north-west of St. Omer.
