Hello all my name is Ian Johnson and for the last 5 years I have been gathering information on the very first battalion raised in the Newcastle from civilian volunteers the 16th (service) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, also know locally as the Newcastle Commercials. I will be launching a book on the battalion in August 2014 with the aim to raise funds for a memorial to the battalion which is to be unveiled on the Somme battlfield in the village of Authuille in 2015, please visit the website for more information on the book and memorial project
