One uncle - Alfred being awarded the Victoria Cross. The novel is well written, and the research is truly well done and for me includes some truly wonderful insights into the camaraderie of frontline soldiers in all circumstances. The shot for cowardice theme being based on the family's real experiences. I very rarely re-read novels - but this is one I will read again, and it falls into that rare category of a book which transcends fiction, biography and history.
