Missing - 2/Lt P.H.W. Herbage 2nd R War R

The Battle Of Loos 1915.

2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 22nd Brigade, 7th Division.

The 2 R.War.R. War Diary for 12th September 1915, mentions "2 Lieut P.H.W. Herbage joined Battalion for duty" (although his initials may read B.F.W. ).

The 2 R.War.R. War Diary for 25th September 1915, mentions "Missing. 2 Lieut P.H.W. Herbage.".

This officer is not mentioned on the CWGC site, nor in the Roll Of Honour, pages 217 to 222, of "The Story Of The Royal Warwickshire Regiment" by C.L. Kingsford.

This officer is the only one listed as "Missing" in the 2 R.War.R. War Diary for the Battle Of Loos 1915.

The attached includes copies of the handwritten entries and also 7th Division Casualty figures at The Battle Of Loos 1915.

Note, only 1 officer with the Royal Warwickshire is listed as "Missing".

Can anyone provide any further information on 2/Lt P.H.W. Herbage?

Regards

Richard

He doesnt appear in ODGW - and I can't find any similar(ish) name connected with the Warwicks.

Daft question - but I don't suppose he appears later in the War Diary, does he?

Only thinking that the Diary is a contemporary account so he is "missing" when it's written but he later turns up. Therefore, he isnt actually dead - which accoutns for him not being mentioned in any Rolls of Honour. Any idea where he came from - could be worth checking local papers.

John,

I have 2 R.War.R. War Diaries to the end of December 1915 and no further reference is made to 2/Lt Herbage or any other officer as "Missing".

I have no information as to where 2/Lt Herbage came from.

Just wondering, as John said, whether he actually turned up later. Possibly , he survived the war? Have you checked for his MIC /medal roll - there might be some info here ? It might also be worth looking at the Army Lists for Nov 1918 to see if he is still listed on them at this date.

Dave.

Then in a list published on 18 April 1918 he was Intd (Interned)

However in another list published 28 November 1918 he is down as Repatriated
