familyfriend Posted 19 October , 2004 Share Posted 19 October , 2004 I thought I would like to post an update of my research into Private Mitchell Kirkaldy. My first post was back in June this year asking for help into my ‘New Granddad’ and I was offered help and leads from many forum members, which spurred me onto military research and away from family genealogy. Military time line. 1896 – Born as Michael Roarty Walker but adopted into Kirkaldy family as Mitchell Kirkaldy. 1914 – Territorials – 8th ?? Highland Light Infantry. 1914 March – Enlists in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. 1914 April - Transferred to the 1st Camerons. Regt no. 9691. 1914 - 3rd June – Discharged on payment of £10, para 392 (v). 1914 - 13th June – Re-enlisted for the Dragoons of the Line. Now Regt no.9731. 1914 - 19th June – Transferred again to the 1st Camerons. 1914 June to 1914 Nov – Home 152 days. 1914 Nov to 1915 Feb – France 104 days. 1915 Feb to 1915 March – Home 20 days. 1915 March to 1915 July – France 133 days. 1915 July to 1916 March – Home 220 days. 1916 March to 1916 April – France 34 days. Gun Shot Wound, Rt arm – 31/3/1916. 1916 April to 1916 Sept – Home 151 days. 1916 Sept – Discharged under para 392 (xvi). Any ideas as to why he discharged in 1914 and then re-joined straight away? The discharge payment, was it £10 or 10/-? I have the Camerons war diary from June to September 1916 but it appears he may have been in a home-based hospital between April – September 1916. Which hospital may he have recuperated in? I am still researching ‘Mitchell’s’ 1st World War career so any leads or tips would again be welcome. Finally he also served in the following. 1919 to 1922 – R.A.F. 1924 to 1927 – Scots Guards. In the reserves until 1936. 1939 to 1942 – Royal Artillery. 1942 to 1945 – Transferred to Pioneer Corp at no.45 German P/W camp, Trumpinton. I am willing to share any documents I have gathered if anybody wants them. Paul Micthell Friend
