Airshipped Posted 24 June , 2014 Share Posted 24 June , 2014 'Wings over Westgate', by Geoffrey Williams has been re-published by Margate Civic Society. The original was published in 1985. Williams had served in the Fleet Air Arm: his understanding of labyrinthine Admiralty filing systems, when combined with excellent local history knowledge produced a beautifully balanced mix of factual records and local anecdotes. Williams died in 2008. The book has been reprinted as part of a fundraising effort for the Margate Jubilee Clock Tower Time Ball Restoration Project. However, don't let that deter you: it is not some amateurish "labour of love" - the material is well-structured, well-referenced and an excellent piece of serious scholarship. Although a lot more original material has become available since this book was written (e.g. Admiralty/ADM and RAF/AIR files withheld under the 75 year rule) it nevertheless stands the test of time, e.g. the Zeppelin raids and later the Gotha raids are all covered, as are anti-submarine patrols. EastSurrey Posted 25 June , 2014 Share Posted 25 June , 2014 Geoff was a delightful man- very modest and with a great sense of humour. He remains much missed. Michael
