Lieut. E.J. Milford AIF 2nd Div Art

A Lieut. E. J Milford was on the nominal roll for 19th FA Battery, 22nd FA Brigade during the summer of 1916. A search on the AWM shows a soldier by the same name commanding 7th Division 2nd AIF 1944-45 (accepting Japaneses surrender at some time). Does anyone know if this is the same person? I would have thought that a high ranking divisional commander would have put his memoirs together somewhere but a search on the AWM suggests not.

Any ideas what happened to him?

Thanks

Joe

Major General Edward James Milford, CB, CBE. DSO was gazetted for the DSO in LG 1 Jan 1919 for services with 4th Battery, Aust FA; in WWII he was CRA, 7 Div; CG 5 Div and CG 7 Div. In 1946 he became Adjutant General and retired in 1948. He was still living in 1972.

Regards, Dick.

Thanks Guys,

Any idea what he got his DSO for?

Another member of 19th Battery at this time was Capt G. A. Vasey. He also went on to become a General in WW2 and after he was killed in a plane crash in Queensland in 1944 Milford replaced him. Seems unusual for a small 1st world war battery to produce two men who would rise to such notoriety. Maybe not?

Thanks again.

Joe

My great uncle was in the 7th Division and there is mention in his battalion's war diary of Vasey being replaced by Milford. If you look at the AWM databases and do a collections search there are plenty of photo's of him.
