Trevelyan Posted 21 October , 2004 Share Posted 21 October , 2004 Hi, I have a WWI group to an IARO cavalry officer in my collection, and according to the war diary of the unit he was serving with, he was appointed 'Special Service Officer' in August 1918. What exactly is this posting, and what did Special Service officers do? Take Care, Christopher
Stephen Nulty Posted 21 October , 2004 Share Posted 21 October , 2004 Christopher Special Service Officer covered a multitude of sins, but was often a title assigned to a man who was appointed to a liaision role outside the usual command structure. So the title doesn't really tell you what the posting is. That would be clearer if you found to whom or what he was assigned as SSO. SN
Trevelyan Posted 23 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 October , 2004 Thanks Stephen - This is what I suspected, but I thought I'd ask first. Take Care, Christopher
