Ghazala Posted 22 June , 2015 Share Posted 22 June , 2015 Jeremy Wilson wrote.. Countless fictions have built up around Lawrence's life. One of the myths is that... "shortly before Lawrence's death in May 1935, Henry Williamson had written to him to propose a meeting with Adolf Hitler, and that Lawrence's last telegram to Williamson to come 'wet or fine' implies that Lawrence viewed the idea with interest and perhaps enthusiasm." Source: Henry Williamson in T. E. Lawrence by his Friends, 1937 In all these cases the balance of evidence leads to the conclusion that they are completely unfounded. Uncle George Posted 24 June , 2015 Share Posted 24 June , 2015 Clearly a member of the Pavarotti family. Ron This man was the centre of a shaming episode in the Great War. He was "a widely admired public figure [who] was turned into an object of hatred and derision."

neverforget Posted 4 July , 2015 Share Posted 4 July , 2015 A clue might be helpful I suppose, so, as you may have guessed by the location, he is ANZAC in the true sense of the word. Born a Kiwi, and joined the Aussie army. A gallant officer, and dedicated to his men. Not someone to keep quiet.
neverforget Posted 6 July , 2015 Share Posted 6 July , 2015 #2887..." ??? was a hero. Wounded himself several times, he kept picking up wounded men and carrying them out of the firing line. I saw him carry fully a dozen men away. Then another bullet struck him in the arm, and it fell useless by his side. Still he would not go to the rear. "I am here with you boys to the finish", was the only reply he would make ... A little later he was wounded again, and fell down. It was cruel to see him. He struggled and struggled until he got to his feet, refusing all entreaties to go to the rear. Then he staggered and fell and tried to rise again. At last some men seized him and carried him away, still protesting." The above is an eye witness account of a little scrape that he actually survived, returning to the front once his wounds had healed, only to be wounded again. 15 days later he was back in action for the final time, and was mortally wounded leading a bombing party, after lighting the fuses of three bombs simultaneously, but only managing to get two of them off before the third exploded. Fattyowls Posted 6 July , 2015 Share Posted 6 July , 2015 Thanks for the clue NF, unfortunately I'm none the wiser. I was thinking along the lines of someone associated with Keith Murdoch but now I'm not so sure; it's tantalising because I've come across a Kiwi serving in the AIF but I can't for the life of me think of where......
