A Brazilian? (Are we still allowed to say "Brazilian" ??)

neverforget Posted 14 July , 2015 Share Posted 14 July , 2015 I did get there, but you beat me to it Dai. Fair play. As ever, found someone else during the search, so here he is: Another non-Frenchie French General, who filled a leading role for his country at the same time. Busy chap! Hugely influential in the field of politics/diplomacy.

neverforget Posted 14 July , 2015 Share Posted 14 July , 2015 No it`s not Salazar, and he`s not Polish. A Slovak, born in Hungary, he saw a way forward for his people with the defeat of the axis powers, and so enlisted in the French army, where he became a pilot. By 1917 he was a French General, and also Minister for war for one of the Slovak countries. Also by this time he had organised legions of resistance fighters. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 16 July , 2015 Share Posted 16 July , 2015 OK. No takers yet. A clue: A European politician during and after the Great War. Was head of government, provisional head of state, Foreign Minister and Finance Minister of his country at various times. Was Prime Minister when his country morphed from one form into another. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 16 July , 2015 Share Posted 16 July , 2015 Indeed he is. Well done UG. Governed his country before and after the Armistice as Prime Minister in (I think ) a revolutionary government as his country changed from being a large kingdom, to a medium sized republic. Subsequently made himself President. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mih%C3%A1ly_K%C3%A1rolyi

Greased lightning mate. http://www.winchestercollegeatwar.com/archive/gilbert-walter-lyttelton-talbot/ Like my mate Bob Latchford, it's all about being in the right place at the right time. I can't remember ever seeing a picture of him before but I'm sure I must have done. I also thought I had a picture of his grave at Sanctuary Wood but I was wrong on that score too. Pete. neverforget Posted 20 July , 2015 Share Posted 20 July , 2015 Like my mate Bob Latchford, it's all about being in the right place at the right time. He acquired that skill shortly after he left us.... I can't remember ever seeing a picture of him before but I'm sure I must have done. I also thought I had a picture of his grave at Sanctuary Wood but I was wrong on that score too. Pete. Here`s another picture of him Although this isn`t a picture of his grave, it is a picture of his original grave marker, mysteriously left one night on Toc H`s doorstep by an anonymous benefactor. Fattyowls Posted 20 July , 2015 Share Posted 20 July , 2015 NF, very interesting, particularly the grave marker. I haven't been in Toc H for years. Pete. P.S. I shouldn't really claim to be Bob Latchford's mate, I have met him but he probably wouldn't remember me from Adam, but being a really nice guy he would pretend that he did if we met again.
