Again, não. Which as you know is Portuguese for 'no'. But my chap was not Portuguese. Not French, not Portuguese. Who can he be?

A Brazilian?

(Are we still allowed to say "Brazilian" ??)

Answering my own question:

Yes it is:

Capitão José Pessoa Cavalcanti de Albuquerque

Yes! The "Father of the Brazilian Armed Forces." Decorated by France and Belgium during the GW:

I did get there, but you beat me to it Dai. Fair play.

As ever, found someone else during the search, so here he is:

Another non-Frenchie French General, who filled a leading role for his country at the same time. Busy chap!

Hugely influential in the field of politics/diplomacy.post-95959-0-42648700-1436896519_thumb.j

He looks like Salazar, but the clues don't fit at all. Was he Polish?

No it`s not Salazar, and he`s not Polish.

A Slovak, born in Hungary, he saw a way forward for his people with the defeat of the axis powers, and so enlisted in the French army, where he became a pilot.

By 1917 he was a French General, and also Minister for war for one of the Slovak countries. Also by this time he had organised legions of resistance fighters.

OK.

No takers yet.

A clue:

A European politician during and after the Great War.

Was head of government, provisional head of state, Foreign Minister and Finance Minister of his country at various times.

Was Prime Minister when his country morphed from one form into another.

Good clues. He is Hungary's Mihály Károlyi.

Good one, chaps. Back now from my stint of "nights."

We don`t appear to have included this fellow yet. K.I.A. whilst serving with the Rifle Brigade, leading his platoon in a counter-attack to the infamous Hooge liquid fire debut.

From the clues I would guess this is Gilbert Talbot of Toc H fame.

Like my mate Bob Latchford, it's all about being in the right place at the right time. I can't remember ever seeing a picture of him before but I'm sure I must have done. I also thought I had a picture of his grave at Sanctuary Wood but I was wrong on that score too.

He acquired that skill shortly after he left us.... :w00t:

Here`s another picture of him post-95959-0-14810500-1437424189_thumb.j

Although this isn`t a picture of his grave, it is a picture of his original grave marker, mysteriously left one night on Toc H`s doorstep by an anonymous benefactor.post-95959-0-40079800-1437424375_thumb.j

NF, very interesting, particularly the grave marker. I haven't been in Toc H for years.

Pete.

P.S. I shouldn't really claim to be Bob Latchford's mate, I have met him but he probably wouldn't remember me from Adam, but being a really nice guy he would pretend that he did if we met again.

Let`s try you with a double. Not too difficult.

Enemies during the war, both fled into exile afterwards.

Got me stumped, maybe Victor Emmanuel of Italy, but I am not very confidant.

#2973 Right hand man: You`re going off track there, khaki. Wrong allegiance.

These two would also have been "at it" during the Balkan wars. The right hand man was knocked out the 2nd Balkan war due to illness, but both were active in the first.

C.I.C. armed forces. Sentenced to death in absentia.

Maybe King Constantine 1st of Greece, looks a bit like him, I am useless at ceremonial uniforms. This search has improved my knowledge of the Balkans though.
