I'm going to say Sadao Araki, Japanese military attache to Imperial Russia. Convicted of war crimes after the Second war.

Not so, Uncle, but you`ve nailed the nationality alright.

My bloke went into politics following a thirty year long military career.

Neil Ruddock would be a clue for those with a keen mind..

Been looking into Japanese serving in the British Army, and found a few, but after having a second look I'm not entirely convinced that he is Japanese after all, though he does tantalisingly look like he might be. I'm lost, as you will have probably gathered.

NF has introduced the theme of Japan. So, who is this ? ? ?

That is Major Percival, later Lieutenant-General Arthur Ernest Percival CB, DSO*, OBE, MC, OStJ, DL - noted for his failure during the Battle of Singapore in 1941/42:

I would never have got him if I hadn't been reading about the battle on another website just before coming here  .

Indeed so. Duff Cooper to WSC: " ... he cannot take a large view; it is all a field day at Aldershot to him. He knows the rules as well and follows them so closely and is always waiting for the umpire's whistle to cease-fire and hopes that when the moment comes his military disposition will be such as to receive approval."

Unsually for a Lieutenant General, he was never knighted.

... Baltic Landeswehr ...

Ah!

Then the link is definitely the Desert!

And this is a young Harold Alexander, later Earl Alexander of Tunis.

The uniform really threw me!

Not sure.

Is it Richard O'Connor (later General Sir)?

No. This chap coined the phrase (about the Treaty of Versailles), "the Peace to end all peace".
