Well I used the extensive library to look for four time DSO winners but none of them seemed to match this chap. I wondered about the Olympian Albert Jackson but he always seemed to wear a moustache.

Need to sleep now, will try again tomorrow if still going

David

Edit: and of course you are right NF. 'Dick Tiltwood' of the Sherston Chronicles

LotWP:

Some speak of Alexander,

And some of Hercules,

But where are there any like Nancy and Jenny,

Where are there any like these?

UG

I think that this was written by Robert Graves, called A Song for Two Children

Nancy was his first wife and Jenny his first and eldest daughter, who I assume he is referring to. I will let the experts take over here.

WAIWA? And on what occasion?

Yes: I liked Michelle's alliteration in her last answer, but the best I can do is, the uninhibited Nancy Nicholson.

Haig's ADC Colonel Fletcher? I don't know if he was a fire-eater, but he seems to have had a certain chutzpah. I enjoyed the deft way he checked if the wind direction was appropriate for the use of gas at Loos - viz, by lighting a cigarette.

Not Alan Fletcher. My man's rank was more appropriate for an ADC.

I think it`s Haig, on Patton. 20th July 1917.

Yes it is. I was surprised to see we haven't had him before (unless I've missed him ... )

"Perhaps (To R.A.L.)

Perhaps some day the sun will shine again,

And I shall see that still the skies are blue,

And feel once more I do not live in vain,

Although bereft of You ... "

I posted him a while back. Not surprisingly Ghazala quickly jumped on him.

He`s here in a different format as a lotwp in any case.

WWAW???:

"I request that hereafter you send officers relieved of their command to GHQ by motor car, and there have them court-martialled.

I consider that as in 1793, there are only two punishments; dismissal and death.

You want to win; to do so, use the most rapid, brutal, energetic and decisive methods."

Yes, Captain George S Patton it is.

A remarkably accurate judgement on what must have been a fairly short acquaintance - Patton was Pershing's ADC, and some other officers also accompanied them, on whom Haig also notes brief comments.

The reference to 1793 presumably makes him French. Sounds a bit blood thirsty for Joffre, is it Pete's mate Nivelle?
