David Ridgus Posted 12 May , 2016 Share Posted 12 May , 2016 B3 Albert McKenzie VC? EDIT - perhaps not. B3 and McKenzie here: Again not sure, although the chap on the chessboard looks a little finer featured. However as VCs seem to be the leitmotif of the display it could be. If McCrae and McKenzie are currently in baulk I believe we have 23 identified and 17 to find. David David
Fattyowls Posted 12 May , 2016 Share Posted 12 May , 2016 Where you will find most of the teachers these days as schools are smoke free zones It's a metaphor for something or other, can't think what. As far as the wizard wheeze of the chessboard I assume we are now doing what this man said to this man. Both worked in munitions factories during the war which is interesting in itself. But when and where did he say it?

David Ridgus Posted 12 May , 2016 Share Posted 12 May , 2016 Hi, is C10 Roy Inwood V.C.? It certainly is. Good spot Gronksmil! His biography in the extensive library shows him to have been a rather abrasive man. However when you read the citation of his frankly pretty ferocious action to win the VC it doesn't seem too surprising 'Inwood returned to a hero's welcome in Broken Hill in October 1918 but at an event organised in his honour gave a controversial public speech. He claimed he had "been stoned by mongrels at the train" when he had departed to fight and with his return "those mongrels were the first to shake me by the hand". He told the crowd "I would like to be at one end of the street with a machine-gun and have them at the other end". In the House of Representatives Rep Michael Considine accused Inwood of trying "to incite trouble between returned soldiers and the working classes". No longer welcome in Broken Hill Inwood moved to Adelaide where he found difficulty finding work' David
David Ridgus Posted 13 May , 2016 Share Posted 13 May , 2016 Blimey, have I broken WIT! If there is anyone still out there who has any idea about the remaining folk on the chessboard please feel free to pitch in. Any petty restrictions imposed by a sad control freak can be ignored. Uncle George Posted 13 May , 2016 Share Posted 13 May , 2016 No, completely stumped. C6 can be found in the EL, but he is not named. I think A9 has appeared on WiT, and D1 I'm sure I've seen before - but that's as far as I can go ...

David Ridgus Posted 13 May , 2016 Share Posted 13 May , 2016 I'm sure you are right about A9. We've also had A7, in fact I'm sure he's a war poet and I posted him. However I can't remember for the life of me. Perhaps some of them are 'just' ordinary soldiers to counterpoint the VC winners and the good and the great.
