Uncle George Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Yes, John id'd [is this a word?] this chap within minutes, confirming my thought that it was ridiculously easy. Since then, not much at all. He's appeared on WiT a number of times. Very heavy clue - he was the only American Field Marshal.

David Ridgus Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 I thought he had a Romanov look about him. I might have suggested Grand Duke Nicholas but his front seems a bit shorn of ironmongery and his nose is a bit bent. David Edit: just seen your last post perhaps I will plump for the Grand Duke
Knotty Posted 17 May , 2016 Share Posted 17 May , 2016 Hi David I'm afraid it not the Grand Duke John

Uncle George Posted 18 May , 2016 Share Posted 18 May , 2016 Another clue, he died in 1934 John Is he Todorov? These long military careers catch my imagination. One of my first WiT posts looked at the overlapping careers of Winfield Scott (War of 1812 to ACW); Peter Hains (ACW to GW); MacArthur (GW to Korea). Knotty Posted 18 May , 2016 Share Posted 18 May , 2016 Yes UG well done General Georgi Todrovo, 1858-1934, had a very interesting military career defeating his opponents Serbians,Ottomans and Romanians in the various wars.
