If I make the not unmitigated assumption that John is correct, may I offer up this M.General, seen here with his good lady.  5880436829_f085352a2e_b.jpgMentioned in despatches more than half a dozen times. (Him, not her.)

Is he Major General Sir Arthur Solly-Flood? Seven MiDs ...

Ironically, no it`s not Solly-Flood. I say ironically, because for the last two hours I`ve been over at my son`s, after a distress call from my daughter in law, who had water pouring through their living room ceiling.

Anyway my chap isn`t British, but was an allied General. He was there with Plumer at the relief of Mafeking, and received a D.S.O. for his contribution.

Is he Sir Alexander Godley, commander of the NZ Expeditionary Force and of a Home Guard platoon during the Second war?

Again no. Not a Kiwi either. Artillery man. His link up with Plumer was made possible by a legendary march.

In WW1 he fought at the Somme, and commanded a division from Dec 1916 through to 1919.

The clues were all there. Well played John, Panet it is. http://canadianartillery.ca/organization/appointments/colonel-commandant/past-colonel-commandants/panet-h-a/

Another good challenge, I have to admit  I had to re-read the clues before I got there. Started ploughing my way through the DSO awards, to many, tried to narrow it down by Royal Artillery but it was Canadian that gave it away?

So Falkenhayn should be Falkenstein?

Indeed. A photograph is to be seen online of the body of "Otto Karl Ferdinand Vogel von Falkenstein" next to his aeroplane. It is guarded by a severe copyright notice, so I'll leave it where it is. But at least the WiT has been solved!

Who wrote this.jpg

An excellent quote seaJane. It is A A Milne in best self deprecating Englishman mode.

He fought and was injured on the Somme
