Canaris?

Canaris it is Uncle George.

One of the more interesting characters of both wars you could say. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_Canaris

It's not Manfred, but is it one of the other Richthofens?

Is it Friedrich Ritter?

Hi Khaki

Correct that's the fellow.

Beaten only by Ritter in his balloon busting exploits, total of 39 confirmed combined kills in less than a year. Died in an accident at 21 years of age, who knows what the future would have held for him.

Hi nf

My first thoughts are a young Cpt. George McElroy, I thought he got the MC x 2, with the infantry, but I'm not sure it's him.

Not McElroy John, though my man also started out as a soldier.

Sorry chaps. Wrong on both counts.

He won his first M.M repairing a communications line in some thirty places, whilst under a severe artillery bombardment. His bar was awarded for his setting about dousing a fire that was endangering a pile of shrapnel and high-explosive shells.

He too was later killed in action in the air.

Too much info there nf, I wasn't looking for an Aussie, but it all points to Cpt. Thomas Baker.

Indeed it does. Killed just seven days before the end of the war.

Dual nationality for this aviator, another who lost his life in 1918

I'm pretty sure that's Raoul Lufbery

That must have been easy for you nf, your absolutely correct.

There is debate as to wether he jumped or fell to his demise.

I've quite a sizeable file on pilots John, most of which are probably too obscure to post, but Lufbery I recognised immediately. In fact I was sure that he had featured before, but it would appear not, unless it was in the original thread from yonks back.

Anyway, my file didn't contain your previous German so there are still plenty out there

Here's a clue, he was passenger in a car which hit a tree on the way back from a party in Dieppe, driven by another ace, his schoolmate.
