neverforget Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 Talking of fiendishly clever, (and taking into consideration the fact that I seem to have been fighting a defensive battle elsewhere just lately,) who is this Herr???
Fattyowls Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 I think I posted him (or identified him) once before, but no matter. He is one of the most important figures in WW1 in my opinion, and definitely a challenge for the current keen crop of WiT? inmates. Pete.

Au contraire mon ami; I think repeaters are a Good Thing. WiT? now has a new cast of dramatis personae and as long as reprehensible show offs like myself can show previously unheard of self discipline (as per Headmaster Ridgus' elegant put down some pages back), I think we will see some interesting quests. I was particularly impressed with Ray's deductive logic above, and it will be interesting to see if with your man we arrive at the same place by a different route. Pete. I endorse my good friend's comments on Ray's solution above - a classic piece of WIT? deduction. And what a tragic story, the reaction of those at home can barely be imagined David
neverforget Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 To help further with #6010; Ray's cryptic clue is double-edged. The chase was on largely due to him, (Jerry, not Ray) and it started in April.

Uncle George Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 (edited) So, who's this? He was a very fine man, a distinguished civil servant who worked closely with Ll.G, WSC and, er, Beatrice Potter. Guest Posted 8 April , 2017 Share Posted 8 April , 2017 Point of order, guv. Do you mean Beatrix Potter, the well-known Lake District rabbit pie fancier? Or Beatrice Potter, the social investigator who married Sidney Webb in 1896? If the latter, then this man must have worked for her before 1896? Is this correct? You wouldn't be trying to mislead us perchance????
