 William March?

Yes indeed: the author of that curious book (a copy of which I have owned for over forty years), 'Company K'. Graham Greene (the author!) described it as "among the most important of all war novels".

It contains an account of the cold-blooded murder of a number of prisoners of war.

I have to admit that I didn't know of him, but following your clues, the extensive library led me here

Thanks very much NF for that short film. - I'd not seen it. 'Company K' is worth reading; but I found it a little odd, and it's over-praised, I think.

As for your chap - is he Marine, writer, artist John W Thomason? Here's one of his:

Sorry U.G. I was just posting that he isn't an American, as I belatedly realised that my comments were misleading. As penance for my sins I will disclose that he is in fact a British ex soldier/author.

It looks strikingly like Bernard Hepton- "Colditz" and "Secret Army". OK,I know it's not but the likeness is there. OK, Nurse- I'll take my tablets now

I'm fairly sure it's 'Sapper' but can't remember his real name.

seaJane,

Sapper is H C (Herman) McNeile.

Sapper is quite correct seaJane, as is H. C. Mcneile of course.

We don't call this the WIT thread for nothing ?

Here's another Hepton/McNeile lookalike, with a connection to at least one of them

John Barrymore would have been about 35/36 years of age in 1917.

Apologies for the delayed response. Unexpected invasion by the grandkids.?

John Barrymore the 1st it is.

The connection is that he played a part in the Bulldog Drummond movie, and more lightheartedly that he resembles both "Sapper" and Hepton.

The link below will show that he attempted to enlist, but was turned down because of varicose veins. He would have been 32 at the outbreak of war.

Just went with the flow of things with this candidate. Normal service will shortly be resumed.

NF

Attempting to enlist

doesn't warrant an inclusion on who is this

Any further breaches of the W.I.T rules will lead to your goodself

being  banned  from the thread  for five whole days

consider yourself duly chastised :P

I most certainly do consider myself duly chastised!

Thank goodness I took the precaution of stuffing an exercise-book down the back of my trousers, or I probably wouldn't be able to sit down for at least the length of my proposed 5 day suspension.

Apologies once more for the diversion, and for my indiscretion in inflicting upon you all my demonic sense of humour. ?

I shall now inflict upon myself a voluntary suspension/ban of half an hour while I run the grandkids home.

(He did look a bit like both of them though.....)
