David Ridgus Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 He is Bernard Adams. I read "Nothing of importance" for the first time over Christmas. JP "Nothing of importance," eight months at the front with a Welsh battalion : Adams, John Bernard Pye, 1890-1917 : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive JP You are right of course! Just before Christmas there was an excellent television programme on the writers who had fought on the Somme. Peter Barton (who was the lead talking head) used Adams' book to illustrate various points and it sent me back to it again. A terrific read David
David Ridgus Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 "It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light." The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes Well only back on WIT for a few hours but already I feel a bit like Dr Watson as described above by Holmes! Well either way its great to see the old gang back in the old routine. In celebration then I shall indulge my old penchant for a man with a moustache and add a leaning Robert Nivelle French General for Pete David
David Ridgus Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 How about this chap. (Does anyone read 'Private Eye'?) UG You pointed out to me that this one is still outstanding. Is it James Chuter Ede, who went on to be a Labour Home Secretary? David
Uncle George Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 UG You pointed out to me that this one is still outstanding. Is it James Chuter Ede, who went on to be a Labour Home Secretary? David Yes. Yes it is. That's that one sorted out.
David Ridgus Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 Chuter Ede was one of four members of the first Labour cabinet in 1945 to be veterans of the Great War. The others were Atlee, Dalton and Viscount Stansgate. David
Fattyowls Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 David, is the non-vertical French general Michel-Joseph Maunoury? I recognise the fella in the fez but can't think where from. Pete.
Steven Broomfield Posted 29 December , 2014 Share Posted 29 December , 2014 Well, as 1105 in the fez doesn't look like Tommy Cooper, is it right to assume he's Turkish?

David Ridgus Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 No but it was another effing Frenchman! This is a better picture. To my shame I'd never heard of him but in reading up on him he seems to have been a very good egg who was given postings whenever there was a mess to clear up. Ron Clifton Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 If it's not Fayolle, how about Franchet d'Esperey, known to the Tommies as Desperate Frankie? Ron
SteveMarsdin Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 Yes it is Fayolle. His Wikipedia entry isn't quite correct: at the outbreak of war he was only a brigade commander (139e Brigade) within the 70e Division:
CarylW Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 Welcome back David. It's good to see this thread revived. Haven't the foggiest who any of them are but carry on - hopefully! Good news about your daughter.

CROONAERT Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 A rather flattering portrait of the guy who brought the Romanian Army kicking and screaming into the 20th Century (amongst other things!) ... Henri Berthelot? Dave
Fattyowls Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 Dave, great spot. It looks like a cigarette card and certainly flatters him. This is what he looked like in real life: Pete.
Fattyowls Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 And while we are on the subject of French generals; how about one of Joffre's scapegoats.........
SteveMarsdin Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 That's him, although I actually think he looks less chubby in the photo ! As Dave indicates he is still extremely well thought of in Romania, even having a village named after him. Langle de Cary ?

Fattyowls Posted 30 December , 2014 Share Posted 30 December , 2014 Steve, Spot on. I accept that posting a picture of a French general with the clue "one of Joffre's scapegoats" doesn't exactly narrow the field down so well done. Auguste Dubail was the Army group commander when the Germans attacked at Verdun, apparently he privately warned of the danger and asked for reinforcements but played down the danger in public. Very publicly fired in March 1916, he took the post of Military Governor of Paris. Pete.
