An excellent biography:

I agree Steven. The book presents the furore over Hobbs' war service in considerable detail.

There has been a sad lack of Hussars lately, so here's a Dragoon to be going on with. He was in charge of some Hussars when he fell (a clue, if you like to take it)

Gotta be one of the Grenfells then ?

Well we've had Francis, Riversdale and Julian already on the thread and Mr B's chap doesn't match them. I know there were lots more but were any of them killed in the Great War?

Have we had yours before Steven? Was he a former equerry to Prince Edward and was killed when he was in temporary command? Can't remember his name. Will have to look through the spreadsheets. A Cadogan I think.

Edit: WGS Cadogan? (Your photo doesn't look much like him though, so perhaps not)

No on all counts.

As an extra, as well as Hussars, he also had Yeomanry and a Household Regiment under command.

6th Cavalry Bde?

No. (Royals, 3rd DG and North Somerset Yeomanry).

Confused. I thought NSY were in 6th Bde.

They were (that's the Order of Battle I posted; they took the place of the 10th Hussars who went to a different Brigade in 1915, until the NSY were dismounted in 1918, at which point the Shiners returned to the 6th Brigade). It is not entirely inconceivable that the 10th Hussars hold a clue.

Have I heard you talk about him?

Only when drunk.

Is he on the Lords MCC Members Memorial?

Sorry; don't know (and I can't remember where my recent Wisden book is).

Francis Whitmore?

Close. Whitmore was present at the action in which my chap was killed, but survived the war.

I'm off to bed now (back to school tomorrow :( ) so the answer will not be revealed before tomorrow morning. Play nicely.

Oh, hang it, another clue. he was a Scots Grey originally.

One more for the night owls. Who is this little girl reading to her brother?

Ghazala may know the answer, which might be a clue, or might not be.

(It's out of a book. Will give the source, when the girl is identified)

Just a word to let my fellow WITs know I am still here, continuing my streak of being quietly stumped. I am also on the search for a new candidate whom I hope to put forth in the not too distant future...

This is one of my favourite roll of honour sites. Lots of good WITs found here. And Walter Long is on the list and does seem to fit the bill.

Accompanied, we all fervently hope and expect, by a selection of 'clues' so arcane and designed to obfuscate that any chance of identifying the person is put back by days.

You remain the standard by which all other cryptic clues are judged Daniel

Victoria Eugenie of Battenburg?

Not her Michelle. I've just noticed that a Hollywood movie is currently in production about my WIT, so we should be hearing a lot more about her when it's released.

She has featured before in WIT. I think Ghazala put up a few pictures of her.

Walter Long?

Nope

And he doesn't appear to be on the MCC Roll.
