Page 463 in this book gives some history about him. It is a huge military/Naval family. link; https://archive.org/details/historyoffanshaw00fans/page/n1057/mode/2up

Thanks. I had been working my way through the divisional commanders of the Itslian campaign in numerical order. Unfortunately for me Fanshawe was in the last of them, the 48th. 😊

Blimey I go away for a few days break, take a sneaky peek and now I don’t know where to start.
Probably leave joining back in until I return at the weekend and have my books around me and a decent Wi-Fi signal….keep up the entertainment😀😀

No, not Butterworth. This chap is not British and not in the armed forces

He doesn't have the look of a pugilist about him. Partisan perhaps?

He is Albéric Magnard.

He is indeed. Sometimes called 'the French Bruckner' for reasons that quite escape me, he was a wonderful composer cut off in his prime. His farm was in the way of the German advance in August 1914, and having sent his family away he died defending it. If you fancy listening to his music try Symphony No.3

You are as formidable as ever UG - I had given scant clues

Not come him across on my musical travels him before now. Always good to discover someone new.

Here is the piece as recommended by David...

WAIWA ? ? ?

A man who represented a “characteristic type of Englishman. As imperturbable as a fish, always unruffled, the sort of man who would eat porridge by gaslight on a foggy morning in winter, looking as if he had enjoyed a cold bath, all aglow with soap and water, just as cheerful as if he were eating a peach in a sunny garden in August.”

Lovely part of the world. I assumed that it was Settle. 😁

I lived in Settle for 3 years in the 1980s. Worked at the Royal Oak at the Market Square.
