No.. The disaster was not during WW1, but he served with distinction in the First World War.

The disaster occurred on the same date as my birthday, and before @Fattyowls makes any comments a good 40+ years between😁

He is Father Francis Browne.

Yes, Father Browne MC and Bar with a Croix De Guerre. He hopped off the Titanic before it went across the Atlantic, but he had a few snapshots before disembarking.. I only stumbled across him after watching 'A Night to Remember '.

Now, try your hand at this one.. obscure-ish though.

Would it be Handcock who was shot with him?

Uncle George strikes again methinks.

Here's a scientist/explorer Who really came into his own in WW2.20230321_155637.jpg.c921434ba4c5b7f7ce816c391d8e0239.jpg

I found him whilst looking for Hugh Fanshawe, in the "Going down the line to rescue Gordon" department.

He was an innovator, inventor, and writer who was the brother of another writer whose most famous book was turned into a very successful film.

Correct, and the only DSO for the Petersburg Light Horse, but the Breaker Morant connection is more significant. I'll stop with my ones for now..

Yes. Fellow Devonian and founder of the forerunner of the S.A.S; The Long Range Desert Group.

I was about to put up more clues, but no need now.

I see to my surprise that he was born in Demport! Also born there (I recently learned) was Guy Burgess.

No. His regiment was further south. He didn't win an M.C. but during his career he was mentioned in despatches a total of 8 times.

I won’t spoil it @neverforget, but he died in my county of birth👍

Indeed he did.

The third battle of the Aisne also has special relevance.

Another hint then; served in the Worcestershire Regiment and ended up in the King's Bodyguard.

One giveaway clue to go...

Unless I spill the beans😂

Of course John, feel free, but here comes the big giveaway in any case:

Aside from the D.S.O and Bar, and the 8 mentions in despatches, there was an additional gallantry medal that I failed to mention; the V.C.
