Uncle George Posted 1 September Share Posted 1 September I was going to wait until May before I posted this chap. But by then, I thought, the darkness might have finally deepened on this old thread of ours. But who is he ? ? ?

(He’s the chap in the white suit to our left, by the way; not the cove in the middle with the homburg and watch chain.)

I remember the community singing at the Cup Final. Tommy Steele did it one year, Bruce Forsyth another. But then it stopped. The Cup Final has lost its lustre since those old days - our venerable old trophies are now but qualifying rounds for European competitions. I blame the government. Knotty Posted 2 September Share Posted 2 September Pretty sure the pipe smoker is the pilot Victor Chapman, who flew with the Escadrille Lafayette (or Americaine) and allegedly the first American pilot to be shot down in combat. He had joined the French Foreign Legion at the outbreak of war before transferring from the trenches to the Aeronautique Militaire a year later in 1915, where he gained his pilots wings. There is a picture (somewhere) of him with a bandage head from a previous sortie, which was taken a week or so before being killed in action above Verdun https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Chapman
