Hi UG

No this chap only had the single bar to his MM, but did receive another significant award, unfortunately he was killed last week of the war.

Going on "started as a soldier", I think we're still looking at aviators. Aussie aviator MM and bar = Thomas Baker.

I recognized him immediately.

I'll refrain from telling though.. There's a good picture of him in the mirror

That’s the fellow soldier to observer to pilot, kia 4/11/1918 awarded the DFC in 1919

ANY reference to modern politics will not be tolerated.

The etymology of the word ‘draconian’ has nothing to do with Dragons, apparently. Which is a shame, as otherwise we would have a link to this chap. Who is he ? ? ?

You are, it goes without saying, familiar with Sassoon’s ‘Aftermath’:

Do you remember the dark months you held the sector at Mametz—
The nights you watched and wired and dug and piled sandbags on parapets?

[…]

    Have you forgotten yet?...
Look up, and swear by the slain of the war that you'll never forget!”

Is it this chap Brigadier General Ivor Philips, the commander who led the 35th on their assault on Mametz Wood in 1916.

😂

Yes indeed - dismissed (rather abruptly) at Mametz. This convoluted effort allowed reference to the Dragon memorial, to his dismissal, and to my annoyance at the removal of my earlier post.

Thought so. :D It was either him or Blackader, so.....

That was a good one, UG - I nearly got him via the dragon, but plunged off down a rabbit-hole at the crucial moment! Philips served in China pre-war and I got horribly tangled up with various people pertaining to the Boxer Rebellion. Chinese dragon, see. Hey ho. Fortunately, I'm a happy-go-lucky, even-tempered loser...

If you hadn't included a mention of modern politics then it would not have been removed.
