Yes. Charles George Gordon. His part in the connection is cryptic, but not intended to obfuscate. He will lead you directly to the first chap I'm looking for.

Solving either men will automatically lead to the identification of the other.

Another clue; pictorial this time. Now you have a clue for both men, who were both "firsts" by the way...20240905_091857.jpg.f272582b00c30336ea43eb76a4dbb268.jpg

The second photo reminds me of the young Hemingway, but he had a very characteristic hairline which doesn't show up. I'm therefore clueless, cryptic or otherwise, about this and life, the universe and everything to be honest....

Pete.

Both high flyers Pete, and both "firsts".

Crosswords? Equations? Waterfalls - Henry Morton Stanley and Livingstone... Stanley had an adopted son, Denzil, who served in WW1. But, Gordon? I'm just chucking pasta against the wall and hoping it sticks here. I may have to give this thread up (again) for the sake of my sanity...

Nice WIT, neverforget!

Well Pat, you have the second man's name, or at least you would have in the singular, and all we need is the surname for the first one, as we already have his first three christian names.

Gosh, I've made it so easy now.

Is it Van Ryneveld and Brand, the first men to fly the length of Africa?

No Pete, sorry. We are talking RFC and Western Front here. Forget Africa and think of the geological phenomenon. Then you have one of their names. That combined with the previous million or so clues will give you the answer.

And there we have it. Well done Bob. The first RFC deaths to die on the Western Front/in combat. Charles George Gordon Bayley and Vincent Waterfall. Simple eh?

I think I need a lie down now.

A splendid Wit? Steve.

It took me a minute or three for the penny to drop about Bayley.

Cool clues!

My thanks go to John AKA @Knotty,

for telling us that the first chap was an early pic of Gordon of Khartuom.

His uniform was telling me RE by the collar crowns but not a lot more.

Equal thanks to @Pat Atkins, for all the words he typed.

I had them too Pat but I never clicked with the Waterfall(s). The 'singular' gave it too me along with high flyer.

I spent ages looking for RE soldiers called 'Stanley Livingstone'.

Then gave up until just now.

Thanks all.

Bob.

Ever heard the expression "Can't see the wood for the trees"?😂 I have to say I was so looking forward to when the penny finally dropped. I did enjoy that one.😁

Haven't the foggiest with Bob's though as yet.

Gun boats on the Nile, Barings Bank, the list goes on, Lord Kitchener and goodness knows who, 'Pasha' Steve of China!

Edit;  Ah, a clue, 'rifles' should send you down A dark alley, into the light, not brigade.
