The 'failed Nile' will help,

Gordon was there, waiting for them,

This General was hated, yet all followed his lead in the early days...

but this General is not the Wit?

He is the one who was an A, who you all see ......

Not him Steve.

The man you seek ridiculed the German Army and is English.

A mustache was on the cards.

So, an officer then?

P.S. I forgot to mention that Charles George Gordon Bayley was named after his uncle Charles George Gordon of Khartoum.

Was he a satirist for the magazine Punch or the like?

Trying to point you in the right direction without giving it away. Clue.

Ignore the Boxing that has me confused now. Not a clue.

My stab is the clue  “rifles not Brigade “, so either Post Office or Artists and as a satirist I will say he was a member of Artist Rifles.

If it is then I have an idea but have never seen that picture before😁

Artist rifles is correct John, just the link to the hated General is where to point you.

Perhaps the hated General is too obscure a clue, a lot did not like him especially other officers.

Try for a respected Lord but he is not the Wit?

Spot on John, he is 'Alfred Ambrose Chew Leete'.

Well played.

I was trying not to give it away by using the rank 'Field Marshal'.

Likewise, until, I found the other one seen in the word press link.

I can only presume they have the correct man but comparing the two it looks ok to me.

Well done John, exceptional sleuthing. That picture reminded of a most despicable individual I.e. ww2 concentration camp guard, and I couldn't quite get past that.

This chap has probably been seen many times without a second glance, but never featured on this thread. He designed and built a reputation before the war, and, after meritorious service, he embarked on a new career with a greater dignity first as an assistant before becoming the assistant director, move forward in time and he returned to his old structured profession working around the world including as a Gunner.

Looks like he's got a few gongs going on there. One of them seems to be an MC. Maybe a Scottish type person too. I'd better shut up now before I display my ignorance any further

If you blow it up you should pick out a bar as well, and he is Scottish t’boot, 2 correct observations.

I've been trying to determine his rank but unless he's a colour sergeant I'm lost. Also, that thing on the bottom of his sleeve below the horizontal stripes?

I’m fairly sure the chevrons in this case are those given for oversea service, one for every 12 month period. Again I’m not sure, you would need a uniform specialist, but the cuff indicates the rank of the officer. It might be useful to identify which regiment.

(we need @FROGSMILE to help here)
