I’m fairly sure the chevrons in this case are those given for oversea service, one for every 12 month period. Again I’m not sure, you would need a uniform specialist, but the cuff indicates the rank of the officer. It might be useful to identify which regiment.

(we need @FROGSMILE to help here)

He’s an officer of the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) with one red overseas service chevron for 1914 and two blue, for 1915, and 1916, respectively.  He is of field rank (3-cuff rings) and the central position of his only visible rank emblem suggests the lone crown of a major.  Although Black Watch officers generally wore the government tartan kilt, those of field rank instead had riding breeches, tall boots and spurs, reflecting their mobility via a charger (mount).  This applied to a battalion adjutant too.

So a Major in the Black Watch, featured on a pretty well known photo, featuring a group of 8 with civilians.

Was he a Scottish architect? I have one in mind who might fit the bill (MC and two bars)

Edit: your initial clues seemed to point to that profession, see

I got him in part because of your Gunner clue, it just rang a tiny bell somewhere. Another good one, so I won't blab the name and spoil it!

It belongs to Pat without a doubt.

Or do we keep Steve guessing or put him out of his misery?

I had seen this picture some time ago and as you say overlooked.

I have no Idea as yet where 'Gunner' comes into it but the 'architect' gave it to me.

That should help @neverforget wandering the war graves.....

I must thank @FROGSMILE for his continued lessons on rank, uniform, insignia and all.

I searched for ages early this morning for a 'Black Watch Major' with no results :w00t:

I still can only find a later picture of him, not your OP.

Left to right are... Major WB Binnie (IWGC Deputy Director of Works); Captain John Truelove (IWGC Architect); Major-General Sir Fabian Ware (founder of IWGC) Colonel Clive Wigram (King George's private secretary); Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig; Colonel H T Goodland; King George V and T Elvidge (Head Gardener Tyne Cot).

When Binnie went back to his architectural practice after his time with the IWGC one of his later commissions was the East Stand at Highbury Stadium

Here you go @neverforget.  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Binnie_(architect)
