Very sad, do you know if he was permanently blind or was it a temporary thing? Perhaps he later became a St Dunstan's old boy, might be worth looking into further.

It may be worth sending an e-mail to the Head of Public Relations at enquires@st-dunstans.co.uk to see if they hold any archives/records for this period. It was founded in 1915 mainly to treat men blinded by mustard gas, I think about 1500 men passed through the doors of St Dunstans during WW1.
