markinbelfast Posted 24 October , 2004 Share Posted 24 October , 2004 I know that this could fit into the for sale section but thought more apt to here for a 'through the ranks' discussion click here at first it looks like a normal 1915 star to a private but the seller tells us shes a KIA to a secong Lt....could a pte rise this far or is the seller being a bit 'whatever with the truth'! PhilB Posted 24 October , 2004 Share Posted 24 October , 2004 Quite possible, Mark, and not unusual. In fact, I`d hazard a guess that a high proportion of 2/Lts KIA 1918 were privates in 1915. Of course, they didn`t go "through the ranks" but often went straight from Pte to 2/Lt. Phil B.

Max Posted 24 October , 2004 Share Posted 24 October , 2004 I am not really au fait with naming protocols of 1914/15 Stars (or any other medal for that matter) but should there be a colon after the initial T on the mans name? Andy
Desmond7 Posted 24 October , 2004 Share Posted 24 October , 2004 Can't help with Halliday himself, but I do have several instances of men from middle-classes joining Rifles as private soldiers in Spring of 1915 and who later become attached to the cadet crops ... by 1st July 1916 mosy of them are 2lts. PhilB Posted 24 October , 2004 Share Posted 24 October , 2004 It doesn`t look like a colon to me, Mark. More like a full stop and a "spurious" mark. Phil B
