Derek Robertson Posted 26 October , 2004 Share Posted 26 October , 2004 SDGW lists L/Cpl William Ferguson, no.23840, 6th KOSB as being killed in France on 3rd May, 1917. I can find no trace of him on the CWGC website. There is an MIC for him. Similarly, I can find no trace there of Pte Edward Westland, no. S-27004, Cameron Highlanders. Nor is he listed on the SDGW database. There is not an MIC for him that I can see. I'm frankly astonished that I cannot trace either man tonight. Any suggestions? MartinWills Posted 26 October , 2004 Share Posted 26 October , 2004 Derek, What are your sources on Westland and what info do you have? That might give pals some clues to work on or to surmise alternatives?
Derek Robertson Posted 27 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 27 October , 2004 Thanks for the help re FerguSSon. I have a death plaque inscribed EDWARD WESTLAND plus his victory medal with the inscription Pte E. Westland, S-27004, Camerons. The plaque is a "Woolwich" which puts his death towards 1916 onwards. There is only 1 E.Westland listed on the CWGC website. He died in the service of the Gordon Highlanders: WESTLAND, EDWARD BRADSHAW S/40828 Son of Mary A. Westland, of "Ternan," Smollett St., Alexandra, Dumbartonshire, and the late George Westland. I can only think that I'll have to wait until his MIC appears online to establish if this chap is the one I'm searching?

Guest Hill 60 Posted 27 October , 2004 Share Posted 27 October , 2004 Dee - One that has a WA mark on the reverse indicating it came from the Woolwich Arsenal.
Derek Robertson Posted 27 October , 2004 Author Share Posted 27 October , 2004 Dee, Death Plaques were made at 2 factories: Plaques made at the factory at Acton have numbers outside the lion's leg (numbers went up to 51). There is no stamp on the rear. Woolwich made plaques have numbers inside the lion's leg up to 100. WA is stamped on the rear (really a W with a bar running through it, so it looks like WA). This means it was made at Woolwich Arsenal.
