Guest grumps Posted 31 October , 2004 Share Posted 31 October , 2004 Hello all my grandad was in the post office rifles. I have found his records at the national archives and he appears to have had 2 regimental numbers. 2 numbers also appear on the campaign medal card. is there any reason for this? I have been told that he was a soldier before the war and bought himself out, re-enlisting again during the war. Would this have anything to do with him having 2 numbers? Many thanks for your help
GavinH Posted 31 October , 2004 Share Posted 31 October , 2004 The Post Office Rifles were a Territorial Battalion (Part of the London Regt). In 1917, the TA introduced new 6 digit service numbers to replace the previous regimental numbers. If the second of your grandfather's numbers has 6 digits, it shows he was still serving in 1917.
