Guest Posted 4 December , 2014 Share Posted 4 December , 2014 Has anyone seen "The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars: Between Self and Sepoy" by Gajendra Singh? The JSAHR has a review which is rather mixed. At £65 it would not be an automatic buy without some strong recommendation. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has read it. Steven Broomfield Posted 4 December , 2014 Share Posted 4 December , 2014 Having just read the review, I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot barge=pole. "Singh obscures his methodology further when he writes that the heteroglot voice of the sipahis reflected and created their own heterglossia; we are now on slippery ground, which only those with postmodernist and linguistic training could follow" Quite. With due respect, I'm not convinced that the reviewer knows his stuff: referring to "A Company of the Jat Battalion" and suggesting that sowars were later called jawans strikes me he might be on slippery ground himself. For £65 I'd definitely give it a miss.
