SMG65 Posted 2 November , 2004 Share Posted 2 November , 2004 My Great Uncle was awarded 7 days Field Punishment Number 2 in May 1916. Can anyone tell me what this punishment would involve and what he may have done to be awarded it? SEAN
Landsturm Posted 2 November , 2004 Share Posted 2 November , 2004 Richard van Emden`s book "The Trench" explains the following: One incident is worth recording. at the pay parade, it was found out that Private Thompson had deliberately not shaved, as much to probe military authority as anything else. Sent before the commanding officer, Thompson was asked why he had not shaved, and was duly sentenced to Field Punishment No 2. This Punishen entailed running around the farm courtyard in full pack with his 9lb rifle held aloft. Thompson had tested the officers` resolve and they had not been found wanting.
