harribobs Posted 4 November , 2004 Share Posted 4 November , 2004 indeed.... As bronze may be much beautified by lying in the dark damp soil, So men who fade in dust of warfare fade fairer, and sorrow blooms their soul

Matt Dixon Posted 9 November , 2004 Share Posted 9 November , 2004 I agree it is a tragedy, so near and yet so far. I have spent three years researching the following chap killed on the same day as Wilfred Owen Name: DAVY Initials: P F Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Captain Regiment: Rifle Brigade Unit Text: 13th Bn. Date of Death: 04/11/1918 Awards: MC Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: B. 26. Cemetery: GHISSIGNIES BRITISH CEMETERY In the course of research the following letter came into my possession: "We suffered badly from enemy fire, and throughout Phillip was his usual chirpy self. A party of men came back from a raid on the enemy line, and several of them became caught under murderous fire, not far from our position. Phillip went into no mans land in front of our line and brought one man back in. Despite protests he insisted on returning for another man. He reached him and straightened himself, and a sniper shot him through the head........." He was 24 years old and had landed in France on the 22nd August 1914.....as with Wilfred, so near yet so far. I laid a poppy on the 4th in memory of both men.
