Guest madeline Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 first time here i wonder if someone could give me a pointer to where i should tryto find some more info on my father. He was in the middlesex regiment, his medal card details are Crudge,Wilfred f Regiment no G/15609 Private He was a prisoner of war. I know this may sound dumb but was there different battalions or units and is there any sites i can look up more details of him. I dearly wish i'd have asked him more things when he was alive. Also did the soldiers always receive the medals they was awarded? Thanks for any help. Regards Madeline
steve fuller Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 Hi Madeline & welcome to the forum The Middx regmnt general info is here http://www.1914-1918.net/msex.htm and the Medal card should help with what Battalion he was in. Should also say what theatre of war he entered hopefully? Other sources of info are: Batallion War diary Battalion Medal Rolls Books on the Regmnt; official historys and privately written ones The Pals on this forum!! Theres also a POW database somewhere on this incredible site, but Ive never looked at it. Will have a gander ... Can you post what you do have on him, & someone here can help paint the picture with you?? Be aware though, unless he did summat specific, hes not likely to be mentioned by name in Diaries, as other ranks werent usually ... And yes, the medals were usually issued to the soldier or their families, but not always. The Medal card & Rolls should indicate whether they were or not. Good luck to you Steve
steve fuller Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 Heres the databse http://www.1914-1918.net/POW/index.php, but he's not there Im afraid. The Middx regmnt POW's are here http://www.1914-1918.net/POW/details2.php?regiment=MIDDLESEX but again, no mention. Still, post away & see what happens is all I can suggest? steve fuller Posted 6 November , 2004 Share Posted 6 November , 2004 Hi Madeline Not positive, but that sounds like the page that leads into the card, rather than the carditself? Did you physically download it & have to pay £3.50? Theres usually a total of 6 medal cards on the A4 sized sheet you get when downloaded. Can you scan it at all & post the image here so we can have a gander?? Just in case, http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchive...1&resultcount=1 is the 'entry page' for the want of a better phrase (!!) If you 'buy' it it gives you 2 Adobe Acrobat pages; the first is jst the National Archives header, and the second is the page with Wilfred's card. If you have a date when he was taken prisoner it may help you narrow it down to a specific action. Cheers
