Soldiers Died in the Great War

Many members, myself included, find SDGW on CDrom an invaluable research tool. This though, is a modern application that could never have been envisaged by the original compilers.

Does anyone know the original purpose for compiling and publishing the 85 separate volumes SDGW? Was it comemmorative, administative, or, or what; and what sources did they use? If it was the original enlistment papers, why are some fields blank? For instance, every soldier must have given a place of birth and residence, but these are absent in many entries.

I don't think that they are based on the original enlistment papers. I could find quite a lot of errors and differences in them. Even in their names and ranks!

Kate,

In the preface for my copy for the Yorkshire Regiment it states that the rolls are compiled from information furnished to Officers in Charge of Records through the Official Casualty Lists.

War Office June 1921.

Bob.
