Guest Pete Wood Posted 9 November , 2004 Share Posted 9 November , 2004 In a Zeppelin raid on the 13th of October 1915, four bombs were dropped on (or close to) Otterpool Camp, between Lympne and Sellindge, in Kent. According to one researcher, he says: "Fifteen men of 8 Howitzer Brigade and 5 Brigade lost their lives and another 21 were injured. In addition 7 horses were killed." The problem is, I can't get close to this number of casualties. By my reckoning 13 men were killed, and only 6 wounded. Can anyone find the 'missing' two men who were killed.....?? rflory Posted 10 November , 2004 Share Posted 10 November , 2004 I have examined my copy of the Third Official List of Casualties to the Members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force Reported between October 1st and December 31st, 1915 and found that the casualties listed under 5th Field Artillery Brigade are as follows: Killed by shell, 13 October at Otterpool Camp, Kent (Militia Order No. 465, 1915) No. 86372 Bombardier David John Philips No. 400004 Lance-Corporal Douglas R. Johnston No. 86503 Gunner Ernest William Bayes No. 86436 Gunner Sidney George Lane No. 86474 Gunner Richard Stewart Truscott No. 86463 Gunner Richard D. Simpson No. 86777 Gunner Henry Adrian Horn No. 86658 Gunner Wilfred George Harris No. 86791 Driver Thomas Dickson No. 86396 Driver Charles Boeyckens No. 86552 Driver Samuel McKay Died of Wounds, 15 October No. 86678 Gunner Harry Rixon (Militia Order No. 465, 1915) 13 October No. 86398 Private P. Borthwick (Militia Order No. 465, 1915) Wounded by Shell at Otterpool Camp, Kent 13 October (Militia Order No. 465, 1915) No. 86551 Gunner Henry Hooten No. 86746 Gunner Robert Milligan No. 86646 Gunner Charles Wellington Chapman Except for the three wounded I think this list is exactly the same list of the 13 men died as the one you presented. I think I have found your other two men in the same reference; Under 29th Battery the following two men are listed: Killed by bombs, 13 October (Militia Order No. 465, 1915) No. 42623 Sergeant Edward Charles Harris No. 86678 Gunner Charles Gordon Peterkin While this listing doesn't specifically list Otterpool Camp, the date and the Militia Order are the same as the 5 Brigade listings and it does indicate "killed by bombs." That would bring the total Killed to 13 and Died of Wounds to 2 for a total of 15 dead. I can find no evidence of other wounded beyond the three listed above. Regards. CATHARINE'S (VICTORIA LAWN) CEMETERY Thanks to you, Dick, I now realise that 29th Battery was not a part of 5th Brigade – and that I should also have been looking at other war diaries. Now that I have examined the diary of 6 Brigade (8th Howitzer Brigade) I have confirmed the above two deaths, plus the following wounded (not mentioned by you): 86672 Gnr Morson RW 89038 Gnr Rennick FA 86478 Gnr Voice T 85536 Gnr Tremblay OL 86053 Dvr Bernard HF 400003 Sgt Eyre RF 400002 Pte Hudson H
Guest Pete Wood Posted 10 November , 2004 Share Posted 10 November , 2004 The case of Sgt EC Harris is interesting, I think, and I have alerted Terry Denham as a potential candidate for a project he is working on. This man appears to be buried in Canada….! If you have more wounded, as between us we seem to have 10 wounded (not 21 as stated), please let me know. Thanks
