Guest tonyrob48 Posted 11 November , 2004 Share Posted 11 November , 2004 I have managed to track down a medal record but it indicated a Corps, Rank and a Regiment number. Is this the service number?
DirtyDick Posted 11 November , 2004 Share Posted 11 November , 2004 Yes. During the period, however, service numbers were not unique and related not to the Army as a whole, as today, but to a particular regiment (or even battalion). Thus, there would be a large number of men sharing identical service/regimental numbers. When soldiers moved to different units (or their own unit was reorganised) they almost always received a new number, so this accounts for 2, 3 or more different numbers on MICs etc. Richard
Guest tonyrob48 Posted 11 November , 2004 Share Posted 11 November , 2004 That is very helpful of you. I am very new to all this. The medal record only shows one number and RAMC as Corps. So I assume that he spent all his time in the RAMC but may have been posted to various regiments as required.
DirtyDick Posted 11 November , 2004 Share Posted 11 November , 2004 No problems. Yes, I would reckon almost certainly. If he was transferred to a different regiment he would have received a different number, and in any case this other regiment would have been noted on the MIC (top right section of card). As RAMC he could have been attached to various units within the Army as a whole and the Corps, but still have officially remained with this unit.
