I am back off to Ottawa and about in Feb, What level of research can I do in the archive in Ottawa? Do they have the public have the same access to service records that you do in the PRO?

I am just wondering whether to add a few more days to my trip that I can spend there.

Regards

Add two weeks!!

Yes, you can examine many different records of all sorts.

The catch is: you have to do some research beforehand, and preorder the boxes you need. All records are kept in a building across the river in Hull, PQ. After placing your order, the boxes are collected (up to 10 at one time) and delivered to the third floor reading room. You can examine the boxes as much as you want. Each box contains 20 to 40 individual file envelopes, as far as service records go.

It takes them about 2-3 working days to get the boxes across the river.

So the point is, please don't show up, thump your fist on the desk, and ask to see the file for Private Whatsit. You will see it, but not for 2 or 3 days.

This procedure doesn't allow for browsing, like you would in a library. You must know what you need to order. If you don't know what you need, then you must use Archivanet, or a human consultant on the third floor, who will employ computer and paper databases to try to help you.

But it is tremendous fun!!

Cheers for that,

I have a list of men so I can plan it all in advance.

Peter, I was unaware the records were kept in Quebec. So the LAC would have had fun if Quebec had separated! :P

Chris, I hope I could have counted on your support and other red-blooded Canadian researchers, to accompany me in an APC escorting several Allied moving vans to the facility in Hull.

Lock and load, buddy.

You bet Peter! Course I would have needed some advance notice to find my trusty Bearskin hat.

Hi Peter,

assuming that Quebec intends to hold on until then, I'm also hoping to get up to Ottawa sometime in the spring so I appreciate your tips. Can I bring computer and scanner in to the archives, or am I relegated to paper, pencil and photocopier (with lots of quarters)?

TIA

marc

Does this mean you will leave the province if they go their seperate way, they may have you up on treason charges. :D

Peter

Do you supply the hardwear or do you BYO.

Unless they have changed rules recently: you may bring a computer, paper, and pencil ONLY.

NO pens, NO digicam, NO scanner.

NO customer photocopier.

After you have slaved away working through the mouldy old boxes, marking the pages or files you want duplicated with cardboard markers, you then describe on a four-part NCR form what photocopying you need done. Two to four weeks later, your copy order will appear on the doorstep via mail.

Kinda takes away from the spontaneity of a find. You are reduced to jumping silently around the reading room, waving the piece of paper around before placing it reverently back into the box. You DON'T get to take a copy home with you that day.

But check their website for current rules and regulations. I'd like to know if they have changed any of the above.

Any acknowledgement, in whole or in part, that I could supply you and other patriots with hardware would violate current federal law.

The password is "turpentine;" pass it on.

This is one of the reasons I pay a professional to do all this for me.

Don't get me wrong, everybody. You will have a lot of enjoyment and dare I say fun doing it yourself.

There is something very special about sifting through a box of crumbly paper and finding a page with a relative's name or a description of an important event.

Just expect some logistical stuff to deal with.

Why should the pros have all the fun??

:D

Never know, maybe I'd better stock up on some cam sticks.

Peter, I'm surprised you can't bring in a digital camera. Unless I'm mistaken they allow that at the PRO. I'd like to know what the LAC's reasoning is for that?

Digi Cams are allowed at the PRO. They are not allowed at LAC. There is no published reason.

Theft of copyright materials?

Perhaps. Still seems a rather inefficient and costly way of making people do research. Time for a new approach, I'd say.

So who do we need to lobby to get the rules changed?
