One of the better written histories. Atkinson was an academic and quite objective. He was not a SWB so arguably was able to write without any regimental bias. The book is laid out chronologically rather than devoting chapters to each battalion (an approach used in other histories). The 10th Bn is mentioned on about 30 pages (book is around 600 pages). Given the limited number of pages and the large number of battalions, it gets a fair deal. MG

Martin has said it all really, the only further observation is that like most histories written after the war (this was completed 1931) later accounts of engagements and action have the benefit (?) of years of study and the availability of information released by the TNA (PRO). Atkinson acknowledges his account is based on the war diaries and Part II Daily Orders, as well as earlier attempts by serving officers. He interprets the diaries well, and has extensive sketch maps which can be more accessible than the original trench maps, also appendices listing Honours.

If interested in the Regiment a recommended read.
