Guest Posted 12 November , 2004 Share Posted 12 November , 2004 Evidently the buildings for this hospital still remain, adjacent to the Tate Gallery and used by them. Does anyone one know when this hospital was opened and closed, how many patients it could house any any other information on it.
Sue Light Posted 12 November , 2004 Share Posted 12 November , 2004 Mungo I think it opened in the spring of 1905, although I don’t have the exact date to hand. It was built on the site of the old Millbank prison, and when opened had accommodation for 280 patients, in 22 or 24 bedded wards. At the time of it’s opening, it was un-named, and during a visit by the King and Queen in July 1905, it was announced that ‘the new hospital should bear the name of Alexandra.’ In addition to its function as a hospital, it provided the first dedicated teaching centre for the Army Medical Department – both to train new doctors in the way of the Army, and for research into disease. It was planned to accommodate patients with the rarest of tropical diseases, and to provide a centre of excellence for their treatment. I'm not sure of closure, but have a feeling it was mid-seventies - ?1974. Sue
