This book by Christian Wolmar (author of other railway books and many transport-related articles) was published in 2010 by Atlantic Books at £20. It covers the role of railways in war since their development early in the 19th century, through the Crimean War to the Cold War. Forum members will be interested in three central chapters on the Great War, one on the Western, one on the Eastern Front.

I've read this too, and very good it was as well.

I like Christian Wolmar's books - I think that I've read them all - as he explains things without being too full of detail.
