The Highland Fusiliers didn't exist until 1959 when the Scots Fusiliers amalgamated with the Highland Light Infantry. He would have been too old to be a Highland Fusilier. I agree with DrB that your great uncle probably served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers, and suspect that the "beret" he is wearing could turn out to be a Tam'.
