WW1 era leather helmet ID

So a friend of mine came up with this headgear and, has had it many years but never really tried to ID it. So have a look at the pix and tell me what you think.... I told him that the shield was that of the city of Amsterdam but that's just a guess.

Certainly falls into the fireman's helmet category by shape but an odd version of the Amsterdam coast of arms - the lions on this both seem to face out rather than in... But see: http://www.warrelics.eu/forum/helmets/firemans-helmet-id-215243/

That aside, I don't think it is a converted pickel - the brim is too long and deep.
