algy Posted 2 September , 2015 Share Posted 2 September , 2015 I have been offered the book 'THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME' by Phillip Gibbs could anyone recommend this book please.
The Scorer Posted 3 September , 2015 Share Posted 3 September , 2015 I can't recommend the book as I don't know much about it and haven't read it. However, Philip Gibbs was a war reporter, and features prominently in "Reporting from the Front" which I recently reviewed in the "What Books are You Reading" topic. I gather that he was well thought of, so his book (written after the War) should at least be a good read.

simond9x Posted 4 September , 2015 Share Posted 4 September , 2015 I've read several of his books and enjoyed them all. From memory, they were written very shortly after the events described took place (days/weeks) rather than after the war. This particular book was published in 1917 and is a collection of his earlier writings which suggests that the battle of the Somme may have still been ongoing as he wrote them. I'd give it a go if I were you.
David Filsell Posted 4 September , 2015 Share Posted 4 September , 2015 I have long considered Gibb a much underrated witness to the war.
