Guest cathylee Posted 18 November , 2004 Share Posted 18 November , 2004 Any tips for finding out more info about my great-grandad? I have details from CWGC, but am interested in finding out more. I can't get to Kew easily to look for service record. He was a Private in the Royal Warwickshire when he died but formerly a serjt in the Army Pay Corps. I'm interested to know where he would have been likely to have been based with the Pay Corps, and why he moved to the Royal Warwickshire, and what action he is likely to have been killed in - I think the 1st battalion may have been in First Battle of Paschendale on 12 Oct 1917? Any help/ideas gratefully received!

Mark Hone Posted 19 November , 2004 Share Posted 19 November , 2004 There is a book on the 1st Battalion called 'Seek Glory, Now Keep Glory' by John Ashby. Unfortunately this concentrates on the events of 1914 and deals with the later war very briefly, basically just precising the battalion war diary. It doesn't really say as much as the extract from Kingsford, above , but does emphasise the effectiveness of the British artillery in allowing the attack to be successful. At 5-20 pm the battalion was able to send an SOS signal to the artillery (presumably with flares) who put down a defensive barrage which prevented a german counter-attack. My great-uncle was a pre-war regular, 721 Private John Hone, who served with 1st Battalion Royal Warwicks throughout the war, only to be killed in the battlion's last attack on 21st October 1918.
