Wondering if anybody will do the lookup in the London Gazette or Australia Gazette as I cannot find it. frev Posted 25 November , 2004 Share Posted 25 November , 2004 Hi Liam, As your soldier enlisted in Fremantle, WA - you could try a PM to AndrewP - he's researching Fremantle soldiers & probably already has a wealth of info on him. Cheers, Frev
frev Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 Hi again Liam Just in case you didn't know - this soldier's War Service Record (45 pages) is available on-line at the Australian National Archives website. Cheers, Frev
Andrew P Posted 26 November , 2004 Share Posted 26 November , 2004 Hi Liam I replied to your private message but will post it again here. This is what I have on Barr. No.337-Sgt Hugh Barr (MM) KIA 13/10/17 Menin Gate - Born Larne Ireland & Lived Fremantle - Mariner Age 29 - Enlisted 07/01/16 - Next of Kin (Mother) Margaret Barr of Ireland. I have a photo of him from The Australian War Memorial and also copies of his letters he wrote to his mother. As Frev mentioned his service record is available electronically on the National Archives site http://www.naa.gov.au Unfortunately I've never seen the actual recommendation for his MM, only the notification of the award. He was one of the Scouts of his battalion and seemed to relish that role. The 44th Battalion was a Western Australian unit of the 3rd Division AIF. Any other queries let me know. Cheers Andrew
