2nd Lieut Ernest AUSTEN 14th Hussars

Information from CWGC shows that 2nd Lieut Ernest AUSTEN died in India 1916, having previously served in South Africa.

Further investigation has revealed that he and his wife were both native to Haywards Heath, Sussex.

He is listed on the Haywards Heath Memorial.

CWGC shows his wife as living in Oadby, Liecs, but backtracking has revealed that she was Charlotte Cresswell COLES from Haywards Heath, and that she and Ernest married in Edmonton, London in 1903.

Two AUSTEN children were born in Blaby District, Liecs (which includes Oadby)

in 1907 and 1909

I have an untraced Ernest AUSTEN listed on the War Memorial at Dymchurch in Kent (no other details given) and am investigating the possibility that these two men are one and the same. (There do not seem to be any other possibilities, unless this Ernest is one of those "missed" by CWGC).

Does anybody have anything which might indicate that Ernest AUSTEN of the 14th Hussars also had some connection with Dymchurch in Kent.

Many thanks for any assistance

Dave Dixon

I have an interest in the 14th Hussars but can't help on Kent, other than they were based there prior to 1906. I would like to know more about Austen's family though.

He was born in April 1870 and died at Meerut aged 46 years. He never saw any Great War active service
